Mariculture is a branch of aquaculture that concerns the artificial cultivation of marine organisms in the sea or brackish water, especially of fish and shellfish, in special pens or ponds, or on ropes, poles or cages. Mariculture is an environmentally acceptable, economically sustainable and socially desirable activity. Croatia is a country in which the sea was used as a source of food as early as a thousand years ago.
